Points of Light Conference: Promoting NYAVA and Lessons in Networking

The National Conference on Volunteering and Service just rolled through town. I was there as a professional in the field wanting to learn a thing or two, but primarily as the official representative of NYAVA. I and countless others attended with an aim to make connections that would open opportunities to grow our businesses, organizations, and careers.  The world is shrinking and so networking is integral to our development.  There are endless ways to expand your network; it goes well beyond passing out your business card (although they still seem to be critical to the process). The conference proved to be an education for me in the current trends of connection making, perhaps even more so than it was on the topic of volunteer management.  I thought I would reflect on some of the lessons I learned and how we have been working to expand and grow the NYAVA network. An Attendee’s View

The National Conference on Volunteering and Service brought together almost 6,000 people who believe in the power of the volunteer. The conference was convened by the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Points of Light Institute, with many sponsors, including Target and the . Throughout the 3 days of workshops, seminars, networking events, forums, and a massive plenary session and “inspirational event” – both in Radio City Music Hall – and Target’s “Party for Good," participants worked hard, played hard, and came away jazzed for the future. Kicking off the Conference in Style

The Advanced Volunteer Management Institute (AVMI) was held the weekend prior to the National Conference on Volunteering and Service. The instructors were some of the biggest names in volunteer management: Martin J. Cowling, Susan Ellis, Rick Lynch, Steve McCurley, and Betty Stallings. Organized by the Hands On Network, the workshop was attended by over 100 people from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, England, Israel, and Guam. READ THE FULL STORY »

NYMAPS, A Resource for University VolunteersBy Meredith Gemeiner

Looking for ways to build stronger connections between volunteer organizations and local campuses? Interested in sharing ideas and resources with other professionals committed to this goal? These are among the aims of the New York Metro Area Partnership for Service-Learning (NYMAPS). Established in 2007, the partnership is a dynamic coalition of community organizations and institutions of higher education dedicated to advancing active citizenship and social responsibility among college students. Specifically, NYMAPS promotes the formation of mutually beneficial campus-community partnerships to address community-identified needs through experiential learning. READ THE FULL STORY »
