What ideas if any do you have as to how NYAVA can increase member participation in running the organization?
#Response DateResponse Text
.4/8/2008 3:07:00 PMI know it is open to all members to participate, but to be honest, many get a sense of it being too much of an insider's club (old guard clique).
.4/8/2008 2:10:00 PMdiscounted rates for committee members for workshops
.4/8/2008 2:35:00 PMIn some way it has to be tied to members recognition of what NYAVA is with their home organization.
.4/8/2008 2:36:00 PMCreate a new member mentorship model for the first six months of membership in NYAVA (or when the contact at an organization changes)
.4/8/2008 2:48:00 PMThat's a hard one. I give you all a lot of credit to take on this huge task.
.4/8/2008 3:52:00 PMNot sure. Volunteer managers are notoriuosly overworked and undercompensated so we are all very busy to start with. I, for instance spend 6 hours a day commuting to a job where I work 8 hours a day. The few hours left over each day are devoted solely to my family and some vacation days are used to volunteer at my son's school. I don't have a minute left over for anything else.
.4/8/2008 6:00:00 PMHave committee meetings after work.
.4/8/2008 7:59:00 PMMake it as easy as possible.
.4/9/2008 4:03:00 PMDifficult one- we're all so overwhelmed it's hard to carve out time. Perhaps a more defined "job description" so we really know what we're doing and approx how much time it will take.
.4/9/2008 5:30:00 PMAsk specific people to get involved. Short term assignments.
.4/11/2008 9:08:00 PMSee One above
.4/15/2008 2:40:00 PMModel a great volunteer engagement program with members. Consider your recruitment, development and retention practices as an organization.
.4/15/2008 3:44:00 PMStreamline the work of the committees. It can be so time-consuming as to be prohibitive.
.4/15/2008 3:57:00 PMMore detailsed info re membership obligations, more advance notice and definite dates for meetings, etc
.4/15/2008 4:34:00 PMjob fairs cooking classes bike trips, other fun social activities
.4/15/2008 4:38:00 PMDevelop a marketing stategy that will cross over the not for profit sector boundaries. Get some high profile, key people involved. Reach out to NGO and other specific interest groups. Lobby for a Statewide Office devoted strictly to volunteerism as they just did in California and NYS used to have under the Cuomo administration. We need more advocates in our profession.
.4/17/2008 10:58:00 AMflexibility -- conference call meetings, streamlining meetings, reduce repeating discussions, be sensitive to the changing work demands of members, transparency, etc.
.4/22/2008 4:57:00 PMThis may not increase member participation, but it would be a really good idea if there was a list serve for volunteer coordinators/managers.
.4/22/2008 5:15:00 PMProvide opportunities that do not take up so much time, i.e. do meetings over the phone, limit business to a shorter period of time.
.4/22/2008 6:36:00 PMMore user friendly asssigments speard out over more members.
.4/22/2008 6:46:00 PMget more word about the organization
.4/22/2008 7:18:00 PMconvene small work groups to handle specific areas and responsibilities
.4/24/2008 6:56:00 PMare there job descriptions?
.4/28/2008 8:21:00 PMMonthly email updates that include upcoming meetings for all of the committees.
.4/29/2008 3:19:00 PMPeople who do serve and find it rewarding directly calling people they know. It's like raising money. If you don't ask, you don't get.
.5/9/2008 3:49:00 PMNOt sure
